Today I want to share with you
another piece of advice... Be confident
in your answers.
in your answers.
When the instructor asks a question,
if you think you know the answer
then answer with confidence. Don't
then answer with confidence. Don't
hesitate. Don't turn your answer
into a question. Don't look around
into a question. Don't look around
to other students for approval.
Give what you think is the right
Give what you think is the right
answer and give it with confidence.
Moreover, when the entire class is
being asked a question, don't wait
for anyone to speak up first; if you
for anyone to speak up first; if you
know the answer then give the
answer. Volunteer. Speak up.
answer. Volunteer. Speak up.
I can't speak for others, but I
understand why *I* would lose
confidence in my answers. It's
confidence in my answers. It's
because of a lack of humility.
Basically, I was afraid of being
wrong in front of others. Listen:
I know it's tough, but we have
I know it's tough, but we have
to work on crushing our ego.
Furthermore, don't be afraid of
making a fool of yourself in front of
your brothers and sisters. We're all
your brothers and sisters. We're all
here for one reason. We're all
here to learn.
here to learn.
Let me tell you a little story from
back when I was studying in my
teens at the Shariah Program. You
know, early in my studies, the
entire class was asked one day
entire class was asked one day
what they thought the word
mutawwalaat meant. I gave an
mutawwalaat meant. I gave an
answer and I said that it meant
"lengthened women." ...
"lengthened women." ...
[awkward pause] ... 'Lengthened women'? ...
What the heck are 'lengthened women'?!
The word actually meant 'those books in
a subject which are the longest and most
detailed on that subject.'
